Trump Completes $5 Million Payment to E Jean Carroll

Former US President Donald Trump has paid writer E Jean Carroll over $5 million in damages, following a civil case verdict that found him liable for sexual abuse and defamation. This payment, confirmed by Carroll's legal team, comes three years after the original verdict.

Roberta Kaplan, representing Carroll, stated, "Today, we are pleased to report that she has received the damages payment the jury awarded her as a result of that verdict." The payment includes the $5 million in damages and additional interest accrued during Trump's appeal process.

Legal Proceedings and Payment

Trump had been seeking to delay the payment, hoping the Supreme Court would reconsider its decision to not hear his appeal. However, last week, a judge ordered him to make the payment. A spokesperson for Trump's legal team declined to comment on the resolution of the payment.

Carroll, a former magazine columnist now 82 years old, accused Trump of sexually assaulting her in a Manhattan department store dressing room in the mid-1990s, and later defaming her in a 2022 post on his Truth Social platform. In 2023, a jury in New York awarded Carroll damages for her claims against Trump, who denied the allegations.

Trial and Appeals Process

After the verdict, Trump deposited the damages into a court-controlled account, which remained there during the appeals process. Trump's legal team criticized the judge's decision to enforce the payment, describing the case as a "hoax" and a "Witch Hunt" allegedly backed by Democrats. They also accused Judge Lewis Kaplan of admitting evidence that they argued unfairly influenced the jury's decision against Trump.

Despite these assertions, a federal appeals court upheld the jury's verdict last year, finding no errors by Judge Kaplan that would justify a new trial. Last month, the Supreme Court refused to take up Trump's request to review the case, enabling Carroll to receive the payment.

Following the ruling, Carroll expressed her satisfaction on her Substack blog, proclaiming, "WE WON!" and dedicated the victory "for every woman in the world."

Ongoing Legal Challenges

In addition to this case, Trump has appealed another jury's decision from 2024, which found him liable for defaming Carroll in a separate instance, awarding her nearly $84 million. A panel of federal judges dismissed his appeal last year, continuing his legal challenges.
