Israeli Airstrike in Northern Gaza Results in Seven Fatalities
An Israeli airstrike on a police post in the northern Gaza Strip has led to the deaths of at least seven individuals, as reported by health and police officials. Among those deceased is a senior officer and a woman, according to sources within the region.
Eyewitnesses recounted to the BBC that the attack involved an Israeli drone firing four missiles at the police post situated near a popular market in Jabalia, northern Gaza. The Hamas-operated interior ministry in Gaza has labeled the attack a "massacre," identifying Col Mohammed Marwan Salem, the local police station head, among the fatalities.
The Israeli military claimed that Marwan was the head of military security for Hamas’s Central Jabalia Battalion. They also reported that three other "terrorists" were killed in the strike, identifying them as Abdul Malik al-Jabin, Ghassan al-Daqas, and Yaman Abu Obeida, with the first two being police officers.
Those injured were transferred to al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City. Mohammed Moussa, the uncle of another deceased officer, expressed disbelief at the targeting, insisting that his nephew was a civilian involved in routine police patrols at the time of the attack. He questioned the motives behind targeting his nephew.
In a separate incident on Tuesday, further casualties were reported in southern Gaza. An airstrike in Khan Younis resulted in the death of a man, with three others injured. The military stated the target was a Hamas operative. Additionally, a 10-year-old boy, Muataz Abu Shaar, was reportedly killed by Israeli gunfire in Rafah, according to medical sources. His aunt, Suzan Abu Shaar, expressed grief and despair over the incident, highlighting the family's loss and the ongoing lack of safety.
While the Israeli military has yet to comment on the boy's death, both Israel and Hamas have accused each other of frequent breaches of the ceasefire that has been in place since October last year. The health ministry in Gaza claims that at least 1,110 individuals have been killed by Israeli actions since the ceasefire's commencement. Conversely, the Israeli military reports the death of four of its soldiers in Palestinian attacks.
The current conflict traces back to an attack led by Hamas on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages. Israel's subsequent military campaign in Gaza has led to the deaths of over 73,230 individuals, based on figures from Gaza's health ministry.
